This report presents an application of the River Values Assessment System for existing value (RiVAS) and for potential value (RiVAS+) to native birdlife in the Hawkes Bay Region. A workshop was held in Napier on 3rd October 2011 to apply the method. Irrigation in Gisborne District: Application of the River Values Assessment System (RiVAS)

The River Values Assessment System (RiVAS) was applied to the irrigation value in Gisborne District. An expert panel used the system to rank rivers from high to low in terms of their relative potential for providing water for irrigation. A qualitative approach for aggregating people's perceptions

The concept of perceptual map is introduced in this paper to capture the semantics of linguistic assessments of an individual in a qualitative reasoning scenario, concretely in hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets. In addition, the projected perceptual map is considered to provide a space to aggregate different perceptual maps. Perceptual maps to aggregate information from decision makers

Understanding different perceptions of human being when using linguistic terms is a crucial issue in human-machine interaction. In this paper, we propose the concept of perceptual maps to model human opinions in a group decision-making context. The proposed approach considers a multi-granular structure using unbalanced hesitant linguistic term sets. Salmonid Angling in the Gisborne District: application of the river values assessment system (RiVAS)

The River Values Assessment System (RiVAS) was applied by a River Expert Panel to ten resource and user attributes to assess 13 rivers in the Gisborne District for their salmonid angling value. The method was applied to differentiate rivers of national significance (n=4: Ruakituri River, Koranga River, Motu River, Opato Stream), regional significance (n=5: Waitahaia River, Waingakia Stream, Raukokore River, Takaputahi River, Hangaroa River) and local significance (n=2: Wharekopae River, Mangapoike River). The data available from the National Angling Survey were debated by the Expert Panel (low survey responses), so the Expert Panel relied on their own assessments for most attributes. The Panel undertook an independent assessment and three rivers on the cusp of significance thresholds were adjusted with reference to the Panel assessments.This work was mostly funded by the Ministry of Science and Information as part of the Envirolink grant 1012-GSDC92

Fusing hotel ratings and reviews with hesitant terms and consensus measures

People have come to refer to reviews for valuable information on products before making a purchase. Digesting relevant opinions regarding a product by reading all the reviews is challenging. An automated methodology which aggregates opinions across all the reviews for a single product to help differentiate any two products having the same overall rating is defined. In order to facilitate this process, rating values, which capture the overall satisfaction, and written reviews, which contain the sentiment of the experience with a product, are fused together. In this manner, each reviewer’s opinion is expressed as an interval rating by means of hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets. These new expressions of opinion are then aggregated and expressed in terms of a central opinion and degree of consensus representing the agreement among the sentiment of the reviewers for an individual product. A real case example based on 2506 TripAdvisor reviews of hotels in Rome during 2017 is provided. The efficiency of the proposed methodology when discriminating between two hotels is compared with the TripAdvisor rating and median of reviews.
